The International Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research (ICEESR) joined in celebrating all Women and Girls in STEM on the occasion of the UNESCO International Day for Women and Girls in STEM held on February 11, 2025.
The event coincided with the 2025 IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast (#GWB2025). The International Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research (ICEESR) in collaboration with the Organisations of Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) University of Uyo Chapter, Network of Nigerian Women in STEM (NWiSTEM) Akwa Ibom State Chapter and Akwa Ibom State Chapter of Women in Chemistry organized an event held at Mini Theatre, Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit.
The event had in attendance various dignitaries from different part of the State and Institutions including Prof. Daniel Udo, Provost, Akwa Ibom State College of Education (COE), Afaha Nsit who hosted the event at his esteemed institution, Dr. Isaac Ibanga, Chairman, Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter well represented by Prof. Imaobong Udousoro, Prof. Edu J. Inam, Director at ICEESR-UNIUYO & Head of Department of Chemistry at University of Uyo, Dr. Mboso Obodom, Head of Department of Chemistry, Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, Dr. Helen Etuk, Department of Chemistry, University of Uyo, Dr. Aniekan Udongwo, Department of Chemistry, Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit and other team members and Faculty members from OWSD, Women in Science, NWiSTEM, University of Uyo & Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit.
The distinguished Guest Speakers were Dr. Genevieve Iloka, FICCON, Chartered MCIPD, Seplat Energy
Production Nigeria Limited who gave a keynote lecture on theme “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice
in Science” and Prof. Margaret Bassey, Department of Botany and Ecological Studies, Faculty of
Biological Science, University of Uyo who gave her keynote lecture on theme “Accelerating Equity in
Science”.
The annual event aimed at celebrating the impact of Women and Girls in STEM fields featured discussions on the challenges as well as to encouraging young females to choose careers in STEM while defying societal barriers in their pursuits for greater heights. Other highlights of the event included a video message from Prof. Mary Garrson, Co-founder, GWB and Capella Fiesta, President, SLB Foundation, Goodwill messages from the Chairman Chemical Society of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Head, Department of Chemistry, Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit and presentation from students of Demonstration Primary School, Afaha Nsit.
The students had a great time while engaging in fun activities like quiz competitions, drama presentations from female students of COE, and music presentations from secondary school students. And the event ended with a vote of thanks from the Coordinator, OWSD, UNIUYO Chapter, Dr. Atim. S. Johnson.
The Centre supports the UNESCO Call-to-Action on closing the Gender Gap in Science and will continue to support all Women and Girls in STEM.
