Programme philosophy
The department embraces Nigeria’s philosophy of education which is based on ‘the integration of the individual into a sound and effective citizen…’ in this regard, the department seeks to contribute in its own way to the development of full potentials of the student so as to make himself a useful individual to himself and to the society. The programme is therefore geared specifically at achieving a sustainable regional development and integration through resource management and control. The underlying philosophy therefore is universalistic environmentalism, which emphasizes the utilization of environmental resources to solve problems in rational, dispassionate and unprejudiced manner for environmental development and sustainability.
Programme objective
The objectives of the programme include;
- Understand the differential character and spatial relationships of the surface features of the earth in line with current theoretical formulations in the discipline
- Understand the concept of man-environment relations; examine the life of man in his physical and cultural environment; to explain their interactions
- Appreciate and develop a sense of responsibility towards ones societal environment and an intellectual interest in formulation of national goals and policies
- Develop understanding and appreciation of the people of other lands based on differences in their physical and cultural environment
- Develop skills and techniques for accurate, orderly and objective geographical investigation and interpretation both in the classroom and in the immediate environment thereby contributing to geographic knowledge
- Develop skills, techniques, knowledge and attitude that will enable them solve environmental problems and earn a living from the various sectors of the economy

Admission requirements
- UTME Candidates: Passes at credit level in five subjects, which include English Language, Mathematics and Geography at Ordinary level (SSCE, WASCE, GCE and NECO). UTME subjects are English Language, Mathematics, Geography and any one subject from Social Science, Arts or Science
- Direct Entry Candidates: Possession of one of the following qualifications
- Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) merit level (five credit passes in ‘O’ Level Science and Social Science subject. For emphasis, two ‘A’ level passes including Geography
- Plus UTME requirement
