The International Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research in partnership with the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), University of Uyo Chapter and the Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Chemical Society of Nigeria jointly organised this year’s Global Women’s Breakfast at Multipurpose Hall, University of Uyo on Wednesday, February 12, 2020.
The event with theme “Building Bonds to create future Leaders” had the Wife of the Vice Chancellor and President, University Women’s Association Mrs. Rosalyn E. Essien, represented by Dr. Rebecca Usoro (PRO, UWA), as Special Guest of Honour. The programme featured welcome videos from Professor Mary Garson and Laura McConnel, Co-chairs, GWB; welcome address from Prof. S. O. Okeniji, President, Chemical Society of Nigeria and Dr. Atim Johnson, President, OWSD-UUC. The keynote speech on the theme of the event was delivered by Dr. Gloria Essien, a soil chemist, researcher, radio presenter and a relationship coach of the Department of Soil Sciences, while a talk on Women in STEM Akwa Ibom State: the journey so far was given by Mrs Alice Esin, a pioneer Co-ordinator, Women Education Programme in Akwa Ibom State and a past permanent secretary, state secondary education board. There were also company presentations by female scientists who also double as entrepreneurs from Vika Farms, I-Protein and Lopegi Sparkles.
The event had participants from government, industry and academia including University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State University, College of Education Afaha Nsit, Ministry of Science and Technology, Akwa Ibom Water Company, Akwa Ibom Polytechnic, Science College, Abak, Royalty College and other public secondary schools.
There was fun, sharing of personal experiences, networking and action points to create the next generation of female scientists in Akwa Ibom State. The Slogan in the event was: when women gather, great things happen; when women converge, magic unfolds. Thank you, IUPAC, for this great initiative.
